What You Think Is Your Brand Voice Probably Isn't

Let’s clear something up: your brand voice isn’t your logo.

It’s not your tagline.

And it’s definitely not a handful of corporate buzzwords sprinkled across your website.

GOT THAT?!?

Sorry, didn’t mean to yell. I’m very caffeinated today.

Anyway, your real brand voice is what people hear when your business speaks through your website, your social posts, your emails, and yes, even your out-of-office replies.

And for a lot of businesses? That voice is inconsistent at best and forgettable at worst.

What Brand Voice Isn’t

Many companies think their brand voice lives in their mission statement or a catchy one-liner buried on the homepage.

Others believe it magically appears when leadership “approves” the wording on a landing page.

In reality, if your content sounds generic, robotic, or like it could’ve come from any of your competitors, your brand voice isn’t showing up. It’s either buried under jargon or lost in inconsistent messaging.

What Brand Voice Actually Is

Your brand voice is your personality in words.

What now? Let me clarify.

It’s the consistent tone, style, and language that shows up everywhere you communicate. When done well, people know it’s you, even when your logo isn’t visible.

It reflects what your company believes, how you want to make people feel, and how you naturally communicate. It builds recognition, trust, and connection without needing to “say it all” in every sentence.

How to Tell If Yours Is Off

A weak or inconsistent brand voice is easy to spot:
  • Your website reads like a corporate brochure.

  • Your social posts feel disconnected from your other content.

  • Your audience is confused about what you stand for, or worse, indifferent.

When your voice isn’t clear, your message isn’t either. And confused audiences? They don’t stick around.

Why a Strong Brand Voice Matters

Your brand voice is how people get to know you, trust you, and decide whether they want to work with you.

Without it, you sound like everyone else. It would be a shame to have a bland brand.

Your brand voice probably isn’t what you think it is. It’s what your audience experiences every time they hear from you.

If your content feels inconsistent, forgettable, or like it’s trying too hard to sound “professional,” let’s fix it. Give me a shout: 224-645-2748 | david@davidtelisman.com.
