Don't Outsource Your Thinking to AI

There are dumb studies reporting that AI is making us stupid.

First of all, just as they say, “You can’t fix stupid,” you also can’t cause stupid. If you’re stupid that’s because you’re born stupid.

Second, these studies reach their conclusions based on people completing tasks quicker. And that’s bad? If you save time on, say work, you free up time to spend with your friends, family, or watching Monster: The Ed Gein Story on Netflix (it’s a good thing that guy’s not around anymore).

Saving time to do the things you like is not stupid.

Now, if you’re outsourcing all of your thinking to AI, that’s another story. That’s a pretty incautious and lazy approach, and I’m sure it’s rewiring our brains and corrupting their neuroplasticity or something.

I use AI every single day. It's a powerful tool. But here's the thing: it's supposed to be a tool—that doesn’t turn you into a tool—and not a replacement for your brain.

The Problem With "Just Ask AI"

I see this pattern constantly.

Someone needs to write an email, develop a strategy, or solve a problem. Their first move? Copy-paste the question into ChatGPT, Claude, Maude, Todd, or Bob (okay, those last three are made up) and ship whatever comes out.

No editing. No critical thinking. No personality.

The result? Blandvertising at its finest and content that sounds like it was written by a committee of robots who've never had a single original thought.

Here's what you lose when you outsource your thinking:
  • Your unique perspective - AI doesn't have your experiences, your voice, or your insights. It can't replicate the specific way you see the world.

  • Critical analysis - AI hallucinates. It makes shit up with the confidence of a guy who's never been wrong in his life. If you're not thinking critically, you'll publish nonsense.

  • Strategic thinking - AI gives you answers, but it doesn't necessarily give you the right answers for your specific situation. That requires judgment.

  • Your competitive edge - If everyone's using the same tool the same way, nobody stands out. Your brain is your differentiator.

How to Actually Use AI Without Losing Your Mind

AI should amplify your thinking, not replace it.

Use it as a brainstorming partner, a first-draft generator, a research assistant, then get in there and make it yours.

Here's my process:
  1. Think first - Before you touch AI, spend time with the problem. What's your take? What matters here?

  2. Use AI strategically - Get that rough draft, those initial ideas, that research summary.

  3. Edit ruthlessly - Rewrite in your voice,  add your insights, and cut the generic fluff.

  4. Fact-check everything - Seriously, everything.
The companies and creators who are thriving in the AI era aren't the ones who use it most; they're the ones who use it best.

AI users will always be tempted to copy-paste outputs directly. Don’t do that. Read it, question it, and make it better.

AI is brilliant at sounding intelligent, but intelligence without judgment, perspective, and without you is just hooey.
