A HELL MORE SAVAGE THAN MILTON COULD HAVE EVER IMAGINED
To commemorate the one year anniversary of October 7, I am releasing a series of blogs throughout the month that capture my April Jewish National Fund volunteer mission to Israel.
There are still over 100 hostages in Gaza, and it's day 376 that they are in captivity.
These first appeared on social media.

Hostages Square
One of the first people I spoke to in Tel Aviv told me, "Tel Aviv is like another country compared to Israel."
It was tongue and cheek. The city is a "safe" distance from Hezbollah to the north, Hamas, Palestinian Authority, Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad to the east, Hamas to the west, and Houthis to the south (Hezbollah rockets and Iranian ballistic missiles have since reached Tel Aviv and have mainly been intercepted by the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow defense systems.)
Tel Aviv is also as cosmopolitan as it gets, and if I didn’t know better, I'd have believed I was in South Beach, Florida, not far from where I grew up. But the horror of October 7th reverberates here as it does throughout all directions of the State, and ground zero for sitting vigil is Hostages Square, originally located at the IDF Command Center HQ a few streets down.
As the amount of families who gathered and slept in tents grew to urge more action from their government, they were given a larger space in front of Tel Aviv Museum of Art. The world reminds us that Israel has been at war for 192 days. Israelis don't need that reminder, because to our brothers and sisters here, 192 also represents the number of days that 136 souls have been subsisting as hostages in a hell more savage than Milton could have ever imagined.
A Shabbat table for those 136 souls still in captivity who are fed filthy food and water
This pulverizes my heart. A highchair for a baby held hostage whose first months of life are being spent in captivity.
A replica Hamas tunnel. I had the freedom to walk through and out.
A count-up that we pray becomes a rapid countdown.
