Teach Your Children Well
To commemorate the one year anniversary of October 7, I am releasing a series of blogs throughout the month that capture my April Jewish National Fund volunteer mission to
Israel.
There are still over 100 hostages in Gaza, and it's day 397 that they are in captivity.
These first appeared on social media.

"Teach your children well...feed them on your dreams."
The nice thing about songs is that you can make them your own, and these lyrics by Graham Nash swirled through my head while listening to students discuss their experience at Alexander Muss High School In Israel (HSI).
HSI has roots in Miami where I grew up. I didn’t participate in the program, but many of my friends did, and I remember (with some envy) hearing their stories when they came home.
It's my responsibility as a Jewish father to educate my kids about Israel, and I've done my best. I'm glad that they're curious and ask questions, especially during these times. One of the students, a high school sophomore from New Jersey, spoke to us impromptu, and she did a wonderful job. I asked what moment had been most impactful, and she said the program-sponsored visit to Poland in which the students toured Holocaust death camps. She understood, as Jews living in The Diaspora must, that Israel is our first and last stand and that there's nothing more precious than Zionism, the Jewish right to self-determination.
But before touring the campus, we prepared care packages for IDF soldiers who would be fighting during Passover when Jews celebrate our freedom from Egyptian slavery. How could this be more rewarding?
The items were purchased from small businesses that have struggled mightily since October 7. We packed and loaded hundreds of boxes onto our buses and delivered them to an IDF base.
A soldier hitched a ride for a few blocks, another war-weary, yet still equal to the task, 20-something with the familiar sheen of sweat on his forehead and dampened green army jacket. He'd just arrived back at base from Gaza, because the drone he operated got lost in a tunnel...only to pick up a new one and go right back, completing one leg of his return with us.
Yasher koach (may he have strength).
